Xin xăm là một tập tục tín ngưỡng dân gian có từ ngàn xưa. Mọi người thường tới Quan Thánh hội quán (ở Hội An xưa thường có tập tục này) hoặc đền chùa vào những ngày mồng 1, rằm, hoặc linh nhất vào 10 ngày tết âm lịch để dâng hương, lễ bái và xin ngẫu nhiên một lá xăm. Bộ Xăm Quan Thánh gồm có 100 lá, được đánh số từ 1 đến 100, lại chia ra các loại thượng kiết (tốt nhất), hạ kiết (tốt ít), trung bình (không tốt không xấu), trung hạ (xấu vừa), hạ hạ (rất xấu).Tùy vào nội dung, sự tích, thánh ý, giải nghĩa và chú thích của lá xăm, với một người bàn xăm (giải quẻ) uyên bác về tâm thuật và Phật – Lão – Nho, họ có thể tư vấn cho người xin xăm về quy luật ngũ hành, âm dương, nhân quả, thiện đức, nên làm gì và không nên làm gì vào thời gian nào, phải chuẩn bị tinh thần ra sao và thái độ ứng xử với việc xấu, việc tốt như thế nào.
