おもしろみのある話の源流は『竹取物語』、または『今昔物語』や『宇治拾遺物語』に収められた説話にまでさかのぼる。
滑稽な話を集めた本の元祖としては、京都誓願寺の安楽庵策伝が京都所司代の板倉重宗に語った話をもとに作られたという元和9年（1623年）の『醒睡笑』が挙げられる。
近世都市を中心に発展してきた落語には、大きく江戸落語と上方落語の流れがあり、両者には、演目の内容や落ち（サゲ）、小道具、また慣習などに違いがある。
浄土宗の説教師であった策伝は御伽衆として大名の話し相手となり、「落とし噺」の名手であるばかりではなく、文人であり茶人でもあった。策伝の著した『醒睡笑』は、幼少時から聞き覚えた話を集めた全8冊から成る笑話集で、収載された話は約1,000話におよんでいる。収載された話は最後に落ち（サゲ）がついており、策伝はこの形式で説教をしていたと考えられている。
