Die ehemalige Sommerresidenz des Prinzen Eugen von Savoyen (1663–1736) gehört mit ihrer prachtvollen Gartenanlage zu den international schönsten Barockensembles und ist seit 2001 UNESCO-Weltkulturerbestätte. Heute beherbergt das Belvedere als eines der erfolgreichsten Museen Österreichs nicht nur die weltgrößte Gustav Klimt-Gemäldesammlung, sondern auch die bedeutendste Sammlung österreichischer Kunst vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart im internationalen Kontext.Das Winterpalais, einst für den Prinzen Eugen von Savoyen als prachtvoll ausgestattetes Wohn- und Repräsentationspalais errichtet, im 18. Jahrhundert von Kaiserin Maria Theresia erworben, bald für die Hofkammer und dann als Finanzministerium genutzt, ist seit 2013 wieder als Ort für Kunst und Kultur der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich.
Das 21er Haus versteht sich als Ort der künstlerischen Produktion, Rezeption und Reflexion. Im Mittelpunkt der von interdisziplinären und gesellschaftsanalytischen Herangehensweisen geprägten Ausstellungstätigkeit steht die österreichische Kunst des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts.
