Поэма Фирдоуси «Шах-наме» в переводе означает «Книга царей». Это чудесный поэтический эпос, состоящий из 55 тысяч двустиший, в которых причудливо переплелись сюжеты извечной борьбы славы и позора, любви и ненависти, света и тьмы, дружбы и вражды, смерти и жизни, победы и поражения. Поэма представляет повествование мудреца из Туса о легендарной династии Пишдадидов и перипетиях истории Киянидов, уходящие в глубь веков истории Таджиков через мифы и легенды.
В качестве источников для создания поэмы автор использовал легенды о первых шахах Таджиков, сказания о богатырях-героях, на которые опирался таджикский трон эпоху династии Ахеменидов (VI-IV века до н. э.), реальные события и легенды.
Абулькасим Фирдоуси работал над своей поэмой 35 лет и закончил ее в в 1011 году.
Современные исследователи условно разделили «Шах-наме» на три части: мифологическая, героическая и историческая.
