It is unknown that the construction date and founders of the cave city. The cave paints, which are located In the Valley of Gunfe, Indicate that this area was formed around 900 BC. It was also used as a military base by Roman Empire because of its strategic location.\n\n Christian Assyrians Iived in the Hasankeyf until the beginning of Mediaeval Age.
