Ο Ισοκράτης ήταν ένας από τους δέκα ρήτορες του αλεξανδρινού «Κανόνος» και από τους σπουδαιότερους ρητοδιδάσκαλους της κλασικής αρχαιότητας, που θεωρείται συγχρόνως ένας από τους παράγοντες που διαμόρφωσαν την πολιτική κατάσταση του καιρού του. Λίγο μεγαλύτερος από τον Πλάτωνα ο Ισοκράτης (436 π.Χ-338 π.Χ.) ήταν λογογράφος και ρητοροδιδάσκαλος, έζησε και έγραψε στο ίδιο πολιτισμικό και κοινωνικό πλαίσιο του Πελοποννησιακού πολέμου και την μεταβατική περίοδο από τον αποκαλούμενο χρυσό αιώνα στην περίοδο παρακμής της αθηναϊκής πόλης-κράτους. Η ανάμειξη του στα κοινά ήταν έμμεση, με τους λόγους του προσπάθησε να παρέμβει στην πολιτική της Αθήνας, εκφράζοντας πανελλήνιες ιδέες. Σώζονται 21 λόγοι του, 9 επιστολές και μερικά αποσπάσματα.
