Description
São Luís, capital do estado do Maranhão, fundada no dia 8 de setembro de 1612. Localiza-se na ilha homônima (Upaon-açu, na antiga denominação dada pelos índios Tupinambás traduzida como “Ilha Grande”), no Atlântico Sul, entre as baías de São Marcos e São José de Ribamar.É a principal cidade da Região Metropolitana Grande São Luís. Única cidade brasileira fundada pelos franceses, e é uma das três capitais brasileiras localizadas em ilhas (as outras são Florianópolis e Vitória).
Sua história - No local da cidade habitavam nativos de uma aldeia Tupinambá até a chegada de franceses em 1612, vindos das cidades francesas de Cancale e Saint‑Mailo comandados por Daniel de La Touche, Senhor de La Ravardière, que construíram um forte e o nomearam São Luís, em homenagem prestada a Luís IX patrono da França, e ao rei francês da época Luís XIII. Os franceses se aliariam aos tupinambás na resistência aos portugueses e, 3 anos depois, em novembro de 1615, foram expulsos, sob o comando de Jerônimo de Albuquerque, que se tornou o primeiro capitão-mor do Maranhão.
A curta estadia francesa por não terem construído a cidade (construíram um forte) traz discussões sobre a fundação de São Luís, se foi feita pelos portugueses ou pelos franceses.
São Luís também esteve sob o controle holandês no período de 1641 a 1644. Somente depois desses ataques o governo colonial decidiu fundar o estado do Grão-Pará e Maranhão, independente do resto do país. Nessa época, a economia era baseada na plantação, e depois exportação, de cana-de-açúcar, cacau e tabaco.
