Description
De origen muy antiguo, como lo prueba el hallazgo en su término de restos arqueológicos del período calcolítico, Pedrera fue denominada en época fenicia BARBA y, posteriormente, bajo dominio romano, cuando parece que ya se constituyó como asentamiento estable, pasó a llamarse ILIPULA MINOR , dedicada a la explotación agrícola de sus tierras. Estos establecimientos urbanos se mantendrían activos durante la época visigoda. En los tiempos de la dominación árabe la villa quedó reducida a una aldea o alquería uniéndose a Estepa, como anejo, tras la Reconquista.El nombre de Pedrera nos remite a cómo, en tiempos medievales, la villa se había convertido en suministradora de balas para aquellos primeros cañones de artillería que usaban munición de piedra, alcanzando un renombre en esta materia por la excelente calidad de sus canteras dedicadas a la elaboración de estos proyectiles. Otra versión conocida es que para la restauración del castillo de Estepa y para la construcción de la calzada que llevaba de Estepa a Sevilla se pusieron en explotación las canteras de Pedrera para sacar el material necesario. De aquí pudo surgir el actual nombre de este municipio de la sierra sur sevillana.
En 1557, Pedrera obtuvo el privilegio real para poderse constituir como ayuntamiento propio, pasando a ser villa. Posteriormente, en 1837, al suprimirse los señoríos jurisdiccionales, dejaría de pertenecer al Marquesado de Estepa, convirtiéndose en Ayuntamiento Constitucional.
