而佛教的傳入也加速了道教的產生，佛教的佛尊譜系直接啓發了道家構建出完整的道教神仙譜系。
而方仙道和黃老道在漢朝的泛濫對道教的產生起了催化的作用。
在東漢，還出現了以修道煉養解釋《道德經》的著作《老子想爾注》，這被認為是道家思想向道教理論過渡的一個標誌。
