《格林童話》產生於19世紀初。此時，神聖羅馬帝國統治下的德意志地區結構鬆散，無論是在國家還是民族上都缺乏統一性。1806年法國皇帝拿破崙組成萊茵邦聯，廢除了神聖羅馬帝國，亦激起德意志民族主義的覺醒，大批知識份子投入民族解放運動之中。但各公國和自由城市之間存在的包括語言、文化等在內的差異成為了形成統一民族精神的障礙。為了消除這一文化上的阻礙，一部分知識份子開始宣揚文化民族主義。他們在秉承浪漫主義文化精神的同時，亦將眼光轉向民間文化傳統領域，從搜集研究民間文藝入手，並藉助於民歌民謠和童話故事。在這樣的背景下，格林兄弟開始了對廣泛流傳於德意志民間、蘊含德意志民族特色的童話和故事的搜集。
其中 的《灰姑娘》、《白雪公主》、《小紅帽》、《勇敢的小裁縫》……等名篇，已成為世界各國兒童喜愛的傑作。
