中国是历史上最早使用年号纪年的国家。本应用包括了中国历史地理学范围内，在中国历史上各朝代、地方割据政权、民变政权、少数民族政权所使用的年号。
年号索引大体按照中国传统的朝代分章节，该朝代同时期的其他政权年号列于该朝代之后，并分别以时间顺序排列。
每一条年号包括年号名称，使用该年号的君主名称，起讫时间和使用年数（不足一年的则为使用月数），其他需要说明的事项，则会在备注中说明。开始和结束时间不明的则使用'？'代替。在年中改元或终止使用年号的，则在年份后按照传统习惯注明农历月份。带'*'的年号为用其他政权的年号。
