小話は、江戸初期に発売された笑い話集の「醒睡笑(せいすいしょう)」が発祥だと言われています。その後、大人気娯楽だった落語に取り入れられると、話にオチがつくようになり、大ブレイクしたようで、今でも小話は、落語のまくらやオチとしてつかわれ、落語とは切っても切れない関係にあります。
いまある小話は、江戸で生まれましたが、江戸だけでなく大阪や京都でも発展しました。
それらは、江戸時代に作られたことから、ひっくるめて「江戸小話」と呼ばれています。

■小話の特徴

一説には、現在確認される小話の数は、四万を超えると言われており、その８割以上が、江戸時代に作られたと言われていますから、江戸時代の人々が、どれだけ小話を愛していたかがうかがえます。
落語のルーツを探ると、仏教の「お説教」をベースにしたと説があり、世界中さがしても落語と同じ形態の芸能は無く、日本固有の文化だといわれています。こういう所にも外国人が日本に興味を持つ一端があるのでしょうね。
