一部の研究者や専門家、日本文化に造詣の深い方々を除き、多くの現代人は明治時代まで受け継がれてきた変体仮名が読めなくなっています。読めるようになりたいという気持ちはあっても、これまで変体仮名辞典を横に難解な古典文学や古文書を遅々と読み進めていく形で「勉強」するしかなかった。とにかくハードルが高かったのではないでしょうか。実のところ、変体仮名の学習はちっとも難しくありません。早稲田大学図書館所蔵の貴重な写本から選出した仮名と美しい背景、書家の渡部大語氏がアプリのために準備してくださった字母（変体仮名の元となった漢字）を使い、早稲田とUCLAの専門家、また日本文学の博士号をもつアメリカ人プログラマーが全力を尽くして開発したこの豪華で楽しいアプリによって、変体仮名は現代人である我々にとって、初めて身近なものになるでしょう。嘘だと思って、ダウンロードしてみてください。かなりハマるはずです。
アプリの原理はとてもシンプルです。マトリックス式単語カードといえば、なんとなくイメージが沸くでしょうか。まず、画面に変体仮名が現れます。指で押すと、しゅっとひっくり返って字母と読みに転換されます。すでに覚えた仮名は捨て、どんどん新しい仮名を習得していきましょう。
学習の成果を記録する機能、集中的に練習したい仮名を選択できる機能、そしてアプリに収められているすべての変体仮名サンプルと字母を網羅的にチェックできるインターアクティブな辞典も搭載されています。変体仮名サンプルの出典を紹介するセクションもあります。また、近いうちに、単独の変体仮名を覚えた後、ちゃんと続き書きの練習もできる機能も追加する予定です。
早稲田大学とUCLAの新たな連携である「柳井正イニシアティブ グローバル・ジャパン・ヒューマニティーズ・プロジェクト」の一環として開発された、無料でインストールできる、おしゃれな「変体仮名あぷり」。これは実はシリーズの第一弾に過ぎません。日本の文字をもっともっと身近なものにするための、楽しいアプリを今後も配信してゆく予定です。乞うご期待ください。
