La Divina Comedia es una epopeya alegórica en tercetos encadenados, considerada como una de las obras maestras de la literatura italiana y mundial.Numerosos pintores de todos los tiempos crearon ilustraciones sobre ella, destacan Botticelli, Gustave Doré y Dalí. Dante la escribió en el dialecto toscano, matriz del italiano actual, que se utilizó entre los siglos XI y XII. La obra se divide en tres partes: Infierno, Purgatorio y Paraíso.
Cada una de sus partes está dividida en 33 cantos, a su vez compuestos de tercetos.
