تطبيق سفيان الثوريأبو عبد الله سفيان بن سعيد بن مسروق الثورى (97 هـ-161 هـ) فقيه كوفي، وأحد أعلام الزهد عند المسلمين، وإمام من أئمة الحديث النبوي، وواحد من تابعي التابعين، وصاحب واحد من المذاهب الإسلامية المندثرة، والذي ظل مذهبه متداولاً حتى القرن السابع الهجري، والذي قال عنه الذهبي: «هو شيخ الإسلام، إمام الحفاظ، سيد العلماء العاملين في زمانه أبو عبد الله الثوري الكوفي المجتهد مصنف كتاب الجامع»، كما قال عنه بشر الحافي: «سفيان في زمانه كأبي بكر وعمر في زمانهما».
نشأ سفيان الثوري في الكوفة وتلقّى العلم بها، وسمع من عدد كبير من العلماء، حتى صار إمامًا لأهل الحديث في زمانه. طلبه الخليفة العباسي أبو جعفر المنصور ومن بعده ابنه المهدي لتولي القضاء، فتهرّب منهما وأعياهما، حتى غضبا عليه وطاردوه حتى توفي متخفيًا في البصرة سنة 161 هـ

'أول العلم الصمت والثاني الإستماع له وحفظه والثالث العمل به والرابع نشره وتعليمه.'
'إنما يراد العلم للعمل لا تدع طلب العلم للعمل ولا تدع العمل لطلب العلم.'
