תיאטרון תמונע הוא מרכז הפרינג' הגדול ביותר בארץ. בשנת 1999 הפך התיאטרון לבית ליצירה העצמאית כשהוא חורת על דגלו ערכים של מחקר, התעמקות ועיסוק בתכנים אשר לא בהכרח היו מקבלים במה על במות התיאטרון הישראלי הממוסד.לאורך השנים, תיאטרון תמונע שינה את מפת היצירה העצמאית בישראל, יוצרים מקצועיים מכל שדות האמנות רואים בבית מלאכה זה חלל מעבדתי חופשי וייחודי בסצנת האמנות הישראלית, חלל המאפשר את הגשמת חזונם האמנותי ללא פשרות ומתוך תשוקה לייצר תיאטרון מקצועי, רלוונטי, חי ונושם.
התיאטרון המהווה בית ליוצרים ולקהל, הוא למעשה מרכז תרבותי בין תחומי המשלב דיסציפלינות שונות; תיאטרון, מחול, פרפורמנס, מוסיקה, אמנות פלסטית וקולנוע מתוך מוטיבציה להרחיב את גבולות השיח האמנותי, הפוליטי והחברתי כמו גם עיסוק בשאלות פנים מדיומליות המבקשות לייצר שפות פרפורמטיביות חדשות.
כיום התיאטרון מונה בתוכו ארבעה חללים שונים להופעות, חללים אינטימיים אלטרנטיביים וייחודיים, אשר מספקים במה למעל ל- 1,000 מופעי תרבות בתחומים שונים בשנה.
בתיאטרון פועל אנסמבל יוצר אשר הוקם על ידי נאוה צוקרמן בשנת 1986 במטרה ליצור תיאטרון הנשען על יכולת ההבעה והיצירה האישית של המשתתפים ומפיק כשלוש הפקות בשנה. שנה לאחר הקמתו יצר האנסמבל את ההצגה "תמו-נע" אשר הועלתה בפסטיבל עכו 1982. מאז העלה האנסמבל כשלושים הפקות שונות, כולן בשפה תיאטרונית ייחודית ואישית. מרבית ההצגות הועלו בבכורות בפסטיבלים בארץ כפסטיבל ישראל, תיאטרונטו ופסטיבל עכו לתיאטרון אחר ולאחר הקמתו בתיאטרון תמונע, וחלקן הועלו בבכורות בפסטיבלים בינלאומיים כגון: אדינבורו (פסטיבל הפרינג'), קולומביה, מנצ'סטר, גלזאגו, בלפסט, דאבלין, סינגפור ועוד. רבות מההצגות של האנסמבל זכו לציונים לשבח על ידי המבקרים ואף לפרס ה-Fringe First , הפרס היוקרתי ביותר בפסטיבל הפרינג' באדינבורו.
