Lazap Laza Kostić je srpski književnik, pesnik, novinar, dramski pisac i estetičar. Kao doktor prava radio je u Novom Sadu kao advokat, veliki beležnik i predsednik suda, sve ukupno oko osam godina, nakon čega se sve do smrti isključivo bavio književnošću, novinarstvom, politikom i javnim nacionalnim poslovima. Bio je član Srpskog učenog društva i redovni član Srpske kraljevske akademije.Svoje književno stvaranje počeo je u jeku romantizma, pored Zmaja, Jakšića i drugih istaknutih pisaca. Za nepunih deset godina stvaranja istaknut je kao jedan od najvećih pesnika srpskog romantizma. Napisao je oko 150 lirskih i dvadesetak epskih pesama, balada i romansi, a najpoznatije su „Među javom i med snom“, kao i „Santa Maria della Salute“.
