첫번째 편지는 동역자(同役者)였던 디모데가 데살로니카에서 돌아와 새로운 개종자들이 박해에도 불구하고 주님에 대한 신앙심을 잃지 않고 있다는 보고를 한 뒤에 씌어졌다.기만과 감언이설로 사람들을 개종시킨다는 중상모략에 반박하기 위해서 바울은 데살로니카인들 스스로가 자신의 '거룩하고 올바르며 흠없는' 행위의 목격자라는 점을 지적했으며(2：10),
또한 그가 누구에게도 부담을 주지 않기 위해 밤낮으로 일했다는 사실을 환기시켰다. 교회를 어지럽혔던 질문에 답하면서 바울은 산자와 죽은자 모두 그리스도의 재림 때 그의 부활에 참여할 것이라고 설명했다.
2번째 편지는 첫번째 편지 후 얼마 지나지 않아서 쓰여졌는데, 어떤 학자들은 그리스도 재림의 다가옴이 상당히 모호하기 때문에 필자가 바울인지에 대해 의문을 제기한다.
당시 그리스도교인들은 세상의 종말이 가까이 다가왔기 때문에 일을 할 필요가 없다고 확실히 믿고 있었다. 그런데 이 편지는 마지막 날은 적 그리스도가 나타나 자신이 신이라고 주장한 후에나 온다고 설명하고 있다.
