To Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο Κλασικής Ομοιοπαθητικής ορίζει την ομοιοπαθητική ως «θεραπευτική τέχνη και ιατρική επιστήμη». Οι βασικές αρχές της ομοιoπαθητικής προτάθηκαν για πρώτη φορά το 1796, από τον Γερμανό γιατρό Σάμουελ Χάνεμαν (1755-1843) και η πρώτη χρήση του όρου ομοιοπαθητική, από τον ίδιο, χρονολογείται το 1807.
