Shree Swasthani Brata is an annual ritual observed in Nepal among Hindu women. It starts on full moon day of month of January and goes on for 31 days till next full moon. During this lunar month, story of Swasthani Mata is recited in those households who observe this ritual.
Swasthani is the Hindu Goddess who is believed to be a blessing to all her devotees. She is believed to fulfill wishes of all those who worship her with pure heart and full devotion.
Goddess Swasthani is believed to be four-handed goddess with charka, trishul, sword and lotus in each of her hand. She is sitting in the center of Asta Matrika or eight Goddess of power. The Asta matrika are Mahakali, Baishnavi, Brahmi Maheshwari, Kaumeshwari, Barahi, Indrayani and Chamunda. The Asta Matrika is also believed to be blessing the eight knots of Daura in Nepali dress Daura Surwal.
Swasthani Brata Katha is written in Nepali. The story is believed to be first written in Newari before it was written in Nepali. Many people of Sankhu still have hand written Swasthani book in Newari language. However, the story narration is little different in other languages than in Nepali language.
