أنجز الكاتب غسان كنفاني هذه المسرحية في بدايات عام 1967، غير أن "القبعة والنبي" لم تعرف طريقها إلى النشر إلا عام 1973، أي بعد استشهاد غسان كنفاني بحوالي تسعة أشهر، إذ نشرت، للمرة الأولى في مجلة "شؤون فلسطينية"، نيسان 1973. "القبعة والنبي"، هي محاولة غسان كنفاني المسرحية الثانية بعد "الباب"، وسوف نلاحظ هنا هاجساً مسرحياً تشكيلياً، يقوم على لعبة قفص الاتهام الذي يتحرك ليضم المُتهم مرةً والقضاة في مرة ثانية، وقد يمتد ليشمل جمهور المسرحية المفترض. من يتهم من؟ أم أن الجميع متهمون، وهذا "الشيء" القادم من عالم آخر ليس قبعة أو نبياً، إنه العنصر الذي يعلن استحالة علاقة القاضيءـ المتهم، فالجميع قتلة وأبرياء في الآن نفسه، لأن الأساسي هو السؤال عن الجدوى.القليلون جدا هم من الناس يعرفون أن الأديب الفلسطيني الشهيد غسان كنفاني كتب مسرحيات، إضافة إلى كتاباته الأخرى الكثيرة. وليس ذلك غريبا فهو لم ينشر منها إلا واحدة أثناء حياته هي مسرحية «الباب» عام 1965، ولم تثر حينئذ اهتماما خاصا بعد الاهتمام الكبير برواية «رجال في الشمس» التي سبقت المسرحية بقليل من وقت. أما المسرحية الثانية «القبعة والنبي» التي كتبها مطلع عام 1967 فقد نشرت في مجلة «شؤون فلسطينية» في عدد أبريل 1973 بعد استشهاده.
