تحدث ابن الجوزي في مقدمة كتابه هذا عن سبب تأليفه له فقال: "شكا إليّ بعض من أثرت شكواه إثارة همتي في جمع هذا الكتاب من بلاء ابتلى به، وهوى هوى به، وسألني المبالغة في وصف دواء دائه فأهديت له نصيحة وَديد لأودّائه، وقد أتيت بها على أبلغ ترتيب. من هذا نلحظ السبب الكامن خلف قيام ابن الجوزي بتأليف كتابه هذا الذي عرض فيه لمسألة هي من أهم المسائل التي تعتري الإنسان وقلبهُ، ألا وهي العشق والحب.
فانبرى للتحدث عن هذه المسالة الفتاكة التي أفسدت القلوب والأبدان، وحمل معاول الهدم، متسلحاً بأحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وأقوال الصحابة والتابعين، وما ذكر من قصص المغرمين، وما ذلك إلا ليبعد المسلم عن السقوط فيما سقطوا.
ومن المواضيع التي تطرق لها ابن الجوزي في كتابه هذا نذكر: في فضل العقل وما جاء فيه، في ذم الهوى والشهوات، في ذكر من كفر بسبب العشق، في ذكر أخبار من قتل معشوقه، ماهية العشق وحقيقته، الآفات التي تجري على العاشق من المرض والضنى، في الحث على التوبة والاستغفار، في إثم النظر وعقوبته، في حراسة القلب من التعرض بالشواغل والفتن. التحذير من عمل قوم لوط، الافتخار بالعفاف، ثواب من غض بصره عن الحرام.. وبالنظر لما يتطرق إليه المصنف من مواضيع في هذا الكتاب فقد اعتنى "خالد عبد اللطيف السبع العلمي" بتحقيقه وبغزو الآيات المستشهد بها فيه وبتدوين ترجمة لأسماء الأعلام الواردين فيه، كما واعتنى بالتعريف بالبلاد الواردة في النص وبضبط الكلمات والأسماء الغربية، وبالتقديم للكتاب بمقدمة صغيرة يبين فيها أهمية الكتاب، وسبب تأليفه ومنهج المؤلف فيه.
