کراچی (سندھی: ڪراچي) (انگریزی: Karachi) پاکستان کا سب سے بڑا شہر اور صنعتی، تجارتی، تعلیمی، مواصلاتی و اقتصادی مرکز ہے۔ کراچی دنیا کاچهٹا بڑا شہر ہے۔[4] کراچی پاکستان کے صوبہ سندھ کا دارالحکومت ہے۔ شہر دریائے سندھ کے مغرب میں بحیرہ عرب کی شمالی ساحل پر واقع ہے۔ پاکستان کی سب سے بڑی بندرگاہ اور ہوائی اڈا بھی کراچی میں قائم ہے۔ کراچی 1947ء سے 1960ء تک پاکستان کا دار الحکومت بھی رہا۔ موجودہ کراچی کی جگہ پر واقع قدیم ماہی گیروں کی بستی کا نام مائی کولاچی تھا۔ جو بعد میں بگڑ کر کراچی بن گیا انگریزوں نے انیسویں صدی میں اس شہر کی تعمیر و ترقی کی بنیادیں ڈالیں۔ 1947ء میں پاکستان کی آزادی کے وقت کراچی کو نو آموز مملکت کا دار الحکومت منتخب کیا گیا۔ اس کی وجہ سے شہر میں لاکھوں مہاجرین کا دخول ہوا۔ پاکستان کا دار الحکومت اور بین الاقوامی بندرگاہ ہونے کی وجہ سے شہر میں صنعتی سرگرمیاں دیگر شہروں سے قبل شروع ہو گئیں۔ 1959ء میں پاکستان کے دار الحکومت کی اسلام آباد منتقلی کے باوجود کراچی کی آبادی اور معیشت میں ترقی کی رفتار کم نہیں ہوئی۔پورے پاکستان سے لوگ روزگار کی تلاش میں کراچی آتے ہیں اور اس وجہ سے یہاں مختلف مذہبی، نسلی اور لسانی گروہ آباد ہیں۔ کراچی کو اسی وجہ سے چھوٹا پاکستان بھی کہتے ہیں۔ ان گروہوں کی باہمی کشیدگی کی وجہ سے 80 اور 90 کی دہائیوں میں کراچی لسانی فسادات، تشدد اور دہشت گردی کا شکار رہا۔ بگڑتے ہوئے حالات کو سنبھالنے کے ليے پاک فوج کو بھی کراچی میں مداخلت کرنی پڑی۔ اکیسویں صدی میں تیز قومی معاشی ترقی کے ساتھ ساتھ کراچی کے حالات میں بہت تبدیلی آئی ہے۔ کراچی کی امن عامہ کی صورت حال کافی بہتر ہوئی ہے اور شہر میں مختلف شعبوں میں ترقی کی رفتار میں بہت اضافہ ہوا ہے۔

The area of Karachi (Urdu: کراچی, Sindhi: ڪراچي) in Sindh, Pakistan, has a natural harbor and has been used as fishing port by local fisherman belonging to Sindhi tribes since prehistory. The port was known to the ancient Greeks by many names: Krokola, where Alexander the Great camped in Sindh to prepare a fleet for Babylonia after his campaign in the Indus Valley; 'Morontobara' port (probably the modern Manora Island near the Karachi harbor), from where Alexander's admiral Nearchus sailed for back home; and Barbarikon (Βαρβαρικόν), a sea port of the Indo-Greek Bactrian kingdom. Karachi was called Ramya in some Greek texts.[1] The Arabs knew it as the port of Debal, from where Muhammad bin Qasim led his conquering force into Sindh (the western corner of South Asia) in AD 712. Lahari Bandar or Lari Bandar succeeded Debal as a major port of the Indus it was located close to Banbhore, in modern Karachi.
