تدور أحداث هذه الرواية بجاكرتا، عاصمة إندونيسيا، وبعض جزرها، في النصف الثاني من سنة 1965متحكي محاولة الحزب الشيوعي الإندونيسي القيام بثورة شيوعية في البلاد، والاستيلاء على السلطة فيها، مدعوماً في ذلك، من قبل الرئيس الإندونيسي سوكارنو، وجمهورية الصين الشيوعية، مما أدى إلى صراع مرير بين الشيوعيين وبين أفراد الشعب الإندونيسي ممثلاً في جماعة (ماشومي) الإسلامية، التي قدمت الكثير من الشهداء، وزج ببعض أفرادها في المعتقلات، واختطف البعض الآخر. إلا أن العناية الربانية حالت دون نجاح هذه الثورة، التي كان الشيوعيون يقصدون من ورائها تصفية الوجود الإسلامي بإندونيسيا، أكبر دولة إسلامية في العالم. وقد صور الكتاب من خلال هذه الأحداث الكبرى والمعروفة تاريخيا، طبيعة الصراع الدائر بإندونيسيا، على المستوى الاجتماعي والسياسي والثقافي والنفسي بين المسلمين والشيوعيين. وقد جعل الكاتب من أسرة حاحي محمد إدريس، وخاصة ابنته فاطمة، مرآة ينعكس عليها هذا الصراع، من خلال المواجهة التي خاضتها هذه الأسرة المسلمة ضد أعداء الإسلام؛ حتى تحقق النصر للمسلمين
