Nabi dan Rasul adalah manusia-manusia pilihan yang bertugas memberi petunjuk kepada manusia tentang keesaan Allah SWT dan membina mereka agar melaksanakan ajaran-Nya. Al Ahzab : 39).Perbedaan antara Nabi dan Rasul adalah : seorang Nabi menerima wahyu dari Allah SWT untuk dirinya sendiri, sedangkan Rasul menerima wahyu dari Allah SWT guna disampaikan kepada segenap umatnya. Para Nabi dan Rasul mempunyai 4 sifat wajib dan 4 sifat mustahil, serta satu sifat jaiz, yaitu :
1.Shiddiq (benar), Mustahil ia Kizib (dusta).
2.Amanah (dapat dipercaya), mustahil Khianat (curang).
3.Tabliqh (Menyampaikan wahyu kepada umatnya), Mustahil Kitman (menyembunyikan Wahyu).
4.Fathonah (Pandai/cerdas), Mustahil Jahlun (Bodoh).
5.Bersifat jaiz yaitu Aradhul Basyariyah (sifat-sifat sebagaimana manusia).
Sebenarnya jumlah keseluruhan nabi dalam Islam sebanyak 124 ribu orang, dan yang diangkat sebagai rasul adalah sebanyak 312 orang (Hadits sahih riwayat At-Turmuzy) tapi yang disampaikan secara jelas dalam Alqur’an adalah 25 orang, yaitu :
