กีฬามหาวิทยาลัยแห่งประเทศไทย เป็นการแข่งขันกีฬาระหว่างมหาวิทยาลัยต่าง ๆ ในประเทศไทย โดยเริ่มต้นจัดการแข่งขันครั้งแรกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2513 ที่มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ โดยมีมหาวิทยาลัยเข้าร่วมการแข่งขัน 8 มหาวิทยาลัย มีการจัดการแข่งขันมาแล้วรวม 43 ครั้ง โดยในครั้งที่ 44 มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีสุรนารีรับหน้าที่เป็นเจ้าภาพในการจัดการแข่งขัน ก่อนปี พ.ศ. 2500 การแข่งขันกีฬาระหว่างมหาวิทยาลัยยังมีไม่มากนัก โดยมีมหาวิทยาลัยที่เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันเพียง 5 มหาวิทยาลัย ได้แก่ มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย มหาวิทยาลัยแพทยศาสตร์ (มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล ในปัจจุบัน) มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ และมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร โดยในการแข่งขันในครั้งนั้นยังไม่ได้เรียกว่า กีฬามหาวิทยาลัยแห่งประเทศไทย รวมทั้งรูปแบบการแข่งขันก็ไม่ได้รวมการแข่งขันกีฬาหลายชนิดมาแข่งพร้อมกันอย่างเช่นปัจจุบันจนกระทั่ง พ.ศ. 2513 ได้มีการจัดการแข่งขันกีฬามหาวิทยาลัยแห่งประเทศไทยอย่างเป็นทางการเป็นครั้งแรกที่มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ โดยเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปแบบการแข่งขันให้มีการรวมเอากีฬาชนิดต่างๆ มาแข่งพร้อมกันโดยใช้เวลาจัดการแข่งขันประมาณ 1 สัปดาห์ ในการจัดการแข่งขันครั้งแรกนั้น มีมหาวิทยาลัยเข้าร่วม 8 มหาวิทยาลัยใน 12 ชนิดกีฬาปัจจุบัน การแข่งขันกีฬามหาวิทยาลัยแห่งประเทศไทยจัดขึ้นต่อเนื่องเป็นประจำซึ่งมหาวิทยาลัยที่มีความพร้อมและสมัครใจจะหมุนเวียนกันเป็นเจ้าภาพจัดการแข่งขัน โดยมีสำนักงานคณะกรรมการการอุดมศึกษาให้การสนับสนุนเรื่องงบประมาณในการจัดการแข่งขันLatest updates
