Внешним поводом к его написанию послужила волна кривотолков, обрушившаяся на автора в связи с предыдущей работой, так что дело шло о предварении ex post facto основного текста своего рода «Пролегоменами». Ницше уже по выходе книги в свет отмечал даже возможность повторения заглавия прежней книги и прибавления к нему подзаголовка: "Дополнение. Три рассмотрения". Написанная за 20 дней (между 10 и 30 июля 1887 г.), рукопись была опубликована в ноябре того же года в издательстве К.Г.
