Surat al Alaq ini merupakan wahyu pertama Allah yang diturunkan kepada Nabi Muhammad SAW oleh malaikat Jibril di Gua Hira, wahyu pertama ini tidak secara keseluruhan satu surah langsung dari surah al Alaq, wahyu pertama yang Allah turunkan adalah hanya ayat 1 – 5 dari surah al Alaq.Kata pertama dari surah al Alaq adalah berbunyi Iqra yang ertinya BACALAH. Bacalah, perintah Allah kepada nabi Muhammad SAW juga termasuk kepada umatnya adalah diperintahkan untuk membaca. Tetapi, makna dari kata bacalah atau membaca ini tidak hanya sekedar diterjemahkan dalam makna membaca, tetapi membaca disini tidak hanya membaca.
Membaca, betul betul membaca, dalam artian tidak hanya sekedar seperti kita hanya membaca buku saja, itu masih merupakan makna yang sederhana sekali. Padahal,maksud Allah memerintahkan untuk membaca adalah agar umat manusia benar benar membaca, jadi bagaimana erti membaca yang sebenarnya?
Beberapa makna dari kata membaca dalam surat al Alaq, yakni:
Iqra yang artinya bacalah, bererti umat manusia diperintahkan untuk membaca, membaca juga bermakna dengan memahami atau fahamilah yang serupa dengan bacalah.
Ada juga yang bererti telitilah..
Bacalah juga bermakna analisalah..
Dan juga dengan erti yang lebih luas iaitu teori, dan ilmu. Kerana membaca merupakan salah satu gerbang dari ilmu pengetahuan maka ia juga bermakna mencari ilmu..Menuntutlah ilmu walau ke negara cina...
