Kitab ini juga menjadi rujukan utama bagi kalangan ahli fikih Syafi’iyyah dalam menyusun karya-karya mereka hingga saat ini. Kitab ini diringkas agar memudahkan para pembaca tentang gambaran fiqih metodologi Imam Syafi’i.
Dalam kitab Al-Umm, al-Syafi’i banyak menggunakan hadis-hadis Nabi sebagai landasan bagiannya dalam mengambil istinbat hukum.
