Ο αφηγητής πέφτει με το αεροπλάνο του -που έχει πάθει βλάβη- στην έρημο. Εκεί συναντά ένα ασυνήθιστο παιδί (το Μικρό Πρίγκιπα), γνωρίζονται και γίνονται φίλοι.
Ο αφηγητής μαθαίνει πολλά από τον καινούργιο του φίλο.
Ο καινούργιος του φίλος σιγά-σιγά τού διηγείται την επίσκεψή του σε άλλους πλανήτες, όπου υπάρχουν άνθρωποι ματαιόδοξοι αλλά και κάποιοι (ελάχιστοι) περισσότερο "ανθρώπινοι".
Δεν ξεχνάει ποτέ και με τίποτα τις ερωτήσεις που έχει υποβάλει, ενώ ο ίδιος, αντίθετα, δεν συνηθίζει ν' απαντάει στις ερωτήσεις των άλλων…
