Sheikh Hasina Wazed (Bengali: শেখ হাসিনা ওয়াজেদ; English: /ˈʃeɪk həˈsiːnə/, SHAYK hə-SEE-nə; born 28 September 1947) is the current and 10th Prime Minister of Bangladesh, in office since January 2009. She is the longest serving prime minister in the history of Bangladesh.Hasina is the daughter of Bangladesh's first President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Her political career has spanned more than four decades. She previously served as opposition leader from 1986 to 1990 and from 1991 to 1995, as Prime Minister from 1996 to 2001, and has been leading the Bangladesh Awami League since 1981.[1][2][3][4] In 2008, she returned as Prime Minister with a landslide victory. In January 2014, she became Prime Minister for a third term in an unopposed election, violating the key rules of the Constitution.
Hasina is one of the most powerful women in the world, ranking 26th on Forbes' list of The World's 100 Most Powerful Women in 2018.[5] Last year, she was the 30th on the list.[6] Hasina is a member of the Council of Women World Leaders, an International network of current and former women presidents and prime ministers.[7]
Hasina's second term (2009 to 2014) as Prime Minister is overshadowed by quite a few scandalous incidents. These include: Padma Bridge Scandal, Hallmark-Sonali Bank Scam, Share market Scandal, Rana Plaza collapse, and Bangladesh road safety protests 2018.
For the better part of the last two decades, Hasina's chief rival has been BNP leader Khaleda Zia, and their rivalry is popularly known as the "Battle of Begums".[8][9][10] The two women have alternated as non-interim Prime Ministers since 1991.
শেখ হাসিনা ওয়াজেদ বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামের প্রধান নেতা, বাংলাদেশের জাতির জনক ও বাংলাদেশ সরকারের প্রথম রাষ্ট্রপতি বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের কন্যা। তাঁর মাতার নাম বেগম ফজিলাতুননেসা।[১] তিনি টুঙ্গিপাড়ায় জন্মগ্রহন করেন এবং বাল্যশিক্ষা সেখানেই নেন। ১৯৫৪ সাল থেকে তিনি ঢাকায় পরিবারের সাথে মোগলটুলির রজনীবোস লেনের বাড়িতে বসবাস শুরু করেন। পরে মিন্টো রোডের সরকারি বাসভবনে উঠেন। ১৯৫৬ সালে তিনি টিকাটুলির নারীশিক্ষা মন্দির বালিকা বিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি হন। ১৯৬১ সালের ১ অক্টোবর ধানমন্ডির ৩২ নম্বরের বাড়িতে থাকা শুরু করেন। ১৯৭৫ সালের ১৫ আগস্ট এক সামরিক অভ্যুত্থানে তিনি ও তাঁর বোন শেখ রেহানা বাদে পরিবারের সকল সদস্যকে হত্যা করা হয়। বোনদ্বয় সেইসময় পড়াশোনার জন্য পশ্চিম জার্মানিতে অবস্থান করছিলেন। ১৯৬৫ সালে তিনি আজিমপুর বালিকা উচ্চ বিদ্যালয় থেকে ম্যাট্রিক পাশ করেন।
শেখ হাসিনা ১৯৭৩ সালে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে স্নাতক ডিগ্রি সম্পন্ন করেন। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে থাকা অবস্থায় ১৯৬৭ সালে এম এ ওয়াজেদ মিয়ার সাথে তাঁর বিয়ে হয় এবং ওয়াজেদ মিয়া ৯ মে, ২০০৯ তারিখে মৃত্যুবরণ করেন।[২] তাঁদের সংসারে সজীব ওয়াজেদ জয় (পুত্র) ও সায়মা ওয়াজেদ পুতুল (কন্যা) নামে দুই সন্তান রয়েছেন।
আওয়ামী লীগ ১৯৮১ সালে সর্বসম্মতিক্রমে শেখ হাসিনাকে তাঁর অনুপস্থিতিতেই দলের সভাপতি নির্বাচিত করে। ১৯৮২ সালে জেনারেল এরশাদের ক্ষমতায় আরোহনকে অবৈধ ঘোষণা করলেও তাঁর দল ১৯৮৬ সালে এই সামরিক শাসকের অধীনে নির্বাচনে অংশগ্রহণ করে। পরবর্তীকালে তিনি এবং তাঁর দল এরশাদ বিরোধী দূর্বার আন্দোলন গড়ে তুলেন ও ১৯৯০ সালে অভিন্ন রাজনৈতিক আন্দোলনের মাধ্যমে এরশাদ সরকারকে ক্ষমতা থেকে পদত্যাগ করতে বাধ্য করেন।
