Description

iBird’s luxury features distinguish it from all other birding apps on the market. For example, unlike all other birding apps, iBird offers both illustrations and photographs for every species. The beauty of drawings is that an illustrator can emphasize the important identification markings of the bird family, something photographs can’t do. Photographs, however, let you see how the species looks in real life, and so iBird contains multiple photos for each species of bird. Usually the male, female, juvenile and subspecies are included, assuming they are available and meaningful.

Unlike other apps, every species in iBird contains a detailed field marks layer. This important layer can be turned on or off to highlight the important identification characteristics of the bird. Furthermore, every illustration in iBird is a high-resolution composite HDR drawing of the species in its natural environment. This drawing can also be printed out and framed. Additionally, iBird contains more bird song and call vocalizations than any other app (over 4,000). Perhaps the most unique feature to iBird is its comprehensive birding search engine that can turn anyone into an expert birder. It comes with over 35 characteristics that can be searched (such as body color, location, bill shape, etc.). There is also a cool AI-based photo recognition feature -- iBird Photo Sleuth -- available as a low-cost in-app purchase. Sleuth can identify a bird from any photograph, even poor photos taken with your smartphone or tablet.

The iBird Pro field guide for Android has all of these features plus more than can’t be listed here. As a powerful guide to all species of birds of North America, it is all you’ll ever need in a field guide. For these reasons, iBird is one of the most popular apps for teaching ornithology, whether you’re an experienced birder or a novice.

From well-known birds to exotic rare species, iBird works like magic, revealing a list of birds that perfectly matches your search choices. With over 1 million downloads, iBird is the standard by which all birding apps are measured.

This new version of iBird Pro has brought the species names and family categorizations into compliance with the 2018 American Ornithological Union standard. Additional changes include a new Share feature that lets you share the contents of a species page using any Google share app, including email, Facebook, twitter, etc. We also fixed the Size search menu, so it is properly ordered from Very Small to Very Large. We have continued to update many of our illustrations to high-resolution composites that include the male, female, juvenile, sub-species, etc. To see the most recent additions, go to the Illustration Update search attribute (at the bottom of the Search menu) and select 10.01 to view the 42 new species illustrations. The value 10.02 shows 13 new species illustrations and 10.03 shows 16 special owls of Mexico and Central America (if you purchased the Mexican Owls in-app purchase (IAP).

iBird Pro now offers the Birds Around Me feature that lets you narrow species to just those in a radius surrounding your GPS location.

iBird now uses Google Play so that the app and database are combined into a single file. Once you have installed the app and database to your device’s internal memory, you can move the database to your SD Card using the Move Database feature found on the More menu.

Questions & Answers

Q: What is an APK File?

A: Just like Windows (PC) systems use an .exe file for installing software, Android does the same. An APK file is the file format used for installing software on the Android operating system.

Q: If I install an APK from this website, will I be able to update the app from the Play Store?

A: Yes, absolutely. The Play Store installs APKs it downloads from Google's servers, and sideloading from a site like ApkClean.net goes through a very similar process, except you're the one performing the downloading and initiating the installation (sideloading).
As soon as the Play Store finds a version of the app newer than the one you've sideloaded, it will commence an update.

Q: Why ApkClean.net can guarantee APK 100% safe?

A: Whenever someone wants to download an APK file from ApkClean.net, we'll check the corresponding APK file on Google Play and allow user download it directly (of course, we'll cache it on our server). If the APK file does not exist on Google Play, we'll search it in our cache.

Q: What are Android App permissions?

A: Apps require access to certain systems within your device. When you install an application, you are notified of all of the permissions required to run that application.

4 ★Great app. Well designed. Easy to learn and use. Multiple pics of reach species and field marks help a lot with similar species identification. Unfortunately, for reasonable number of species, there is not a song or alarm call recorded for Washington State. Once the missing calls and songs are added for this area, I will give it a five Star.
5 ★Good app with lots of information. It may take some effort to find all features, but it's all there. I just purchased the Birds Around Me feature which helps narrow down searches. Then you can further narrow down with other characteristics. I have downloaded the db but the app has become much more efficient in recent years anyway. Highly recommended.
5 ★I find this app to be invaluable for bird ID whether I'm birding in the field, or sitting in my garden feederwatching. I like that there are several options for searching and now that I have things set up how I want them, the app is extremely easy to use. I especially like the artist's renditions of the birds in addition to the photos.
5 ★This app is so informative and spot on when it comes to bird sounds and location. Great job. KMT N.H.
5 ★best pictures, best recordings, best organization of any birding app I've tried. Understand, though, if you are still a novice at bird ID, no app on your phone will help you as much as having a book in your hand to thumb through. You just can't search an app very well if you don't know where to start - the Family or Order. Or you suspect it's a thrush because of the behavior but don't know which one. If you can't narrow it down more than "small brown birdie," then any app seems useless.
5 ★I love using iBird in the field. It is so convenient to get information about a bird without having to depend on the internet. At this moment, however, I cannot get it to work correctly. The type in common name search is failing. Now I will find out if the help feature works. I asked for help and received a message from iBird immediately! The suggestion was right on target and my problem disappeared. That is the fastest response I've ever received in answer to a call for help. Well done, iBird.
5 ★I have used this app for many years now, and I love everything about it! Whether I'm on a walk, hike, or mountain bike ride, this app is my "go to" source for both visual and song confirmation. I especially like the variety of song variations, which allows me to methodically identify a bird that i cannot see.
2 ★Updated review: dropped the rating. The app has problems with initial startup at least 50% of the time where it gets stuck on first screen and I have to close app and start again. I contacted support to verify if the app is compatible with the newly released Android 10 OS. 3 wks later they respond saying they have no reports of compatibility issues with iOS 10... Ugh! That's not what I asked! Get the free Audubon app that's better. Original review: good app. use Favorites to keep my life list
5 ★A great app overall, that I was happy with for years. But recently there has been a persistent problem where I haven't been able to download the database. I've reached out to the devs a couple of times, but they don't seem very interested in coming up with a solution. I suspect the problem has to do with compatibility with Android Pie. They gave some vague response that there will be an update soon, which *may* fix the problem, but it's been a long time since they put out an update.
5 ★Love that this app includes both illustrations and photos. I have a number of bird ID apps on my phone, but this is definitely my go to. I also love all of the additional information you get, such as habits, behavior, eggs color, conservation status, and many other specifics that other bird info apps (and even physical field guides) don't include.
4 ★[SEE UPDATE BELOW FOR WORKAROUND] I like a lot of things about this app, but its functionality has gradually degraded over the past several days to the point that I have finally uninstalled it because (1) after many attempts I still can't get the database to download for offline use, and (2) now the app is saying there's no internet connection (and therefore many features won't work) when I actually have a very strong signal. I emailed tech support for help a couple of days ago but am still waiting for a reply. UPDATE: iBird Support sent me some suggestions (none of which worked) and offered to help me download the database manually. But I stumbled upon a very simple solution myself, and now the app works perfectly! All I had to do was download the database to INTERNAL STORAGE instead of my external SD card. The app invites you to do either one, but on Android 9 (Pie), the external option seems to be what caused all of the problems I had. I'd also recommend starting with a clean install from Play Store before attempting the download, just to be safe. Android 9 says you can move the whole app to your external card (Settings > Apps > iBird Pro > Storage), but I haven't tried it yet.
5 ★As UK birder travelling to the USA this app has been excellent as field guide, it's ease of use in the field, it's excellent graphics and information, its so quick! especially when you use location to filter the birds of the area you are in! i have the Sibley version but i use this as my default app everytime, off to Arizona on the 7/5/19!
