Sejarah Kitab al-BarzanjiPada masa Sultan Salahuddin Yusuf Al-Ayyubi pada peringatan Maulid Nabi yang pertama kali yaitu pada tahun 1184 (580 H), Sultan memprakarsai kegiatan maulid dengan menyelenggarakan kegatan sayembara untuk menulis riwayat Nabi beserta puji-pujian bagi Nabi dengan bahasa yang seindah mungkin. Sastrawan dan seluruh ulama pada waktu itu diundang untuk mengikuti sayembara tersebut. Dan hasil dari sayembara tersebut yang menjadi pemenang yang menjadi juara pertama adalah Syaikh Ja`far Al-Barzanji.
Tidak disangka, ternyata peringatan Maulid Nabi yang telah diselenggarakan oleh Sultan Salahuddin itu membuahkan hasil yang positif yang menjadikan semangat umat Islam dalam menghadapi Perang Salib menjadi bergelora kembali. Sultan Salahuddin berhasil mengumpulkan kekuatan perang, walhasil pada tahun 1187 (583 H) Yerusalem dapat direbut oleh Sultan Salahuddin dari tangan bangsa Eropa, dan Masjidil Aqsa dapat menjadi masjid kembali, sampai hari ini.
Sebenarnya nama asli kitab ini adalah ‘Iqd al-Jawahir yang berarti Kalung Permata, atau juga ‘Iqd al-Jawhar fii Mawlid an-Nabawiyyil Azhar. Karena pengarang kitab ini lahir di tempat yang bernama Barzanj, yang merupakan sebuah tempat di daerah Kurdistan, sehingga banyak orang yang menyebut kitab ini dengan sebutan Kitab Maulid al-Barzanji. Dan hingga sekarang Kitab ini masyhur dengan sebutan Kitab Maulid al-Barzanji.
