Description
Penyakit Tangan, Kaki dan Mulut atau dikenali juga Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) adalah disebabkan oleh enterovirus dengan majoritinya Coxsackie Virus A16 dan Enterovirus 71 (EV 71).Penyakit ini selalu berlaku di kalangan kanak-kanak berumur kurang dari 10 tahun dan merebak dengan cepat iaitu hampir 100% di kalangan kanak-kanak kecil melalui kontak dengan air liur, cecair lepuh (blister) dan najis mereka yang berpenyakit.
Tempoh inkubasi (tempoh di mana virus mula menjangkiti badan pesakit sehingga wujudnya gejala) adalah di antara 3 hingga 5 hari.
Kebiasaannya, mereka yang dijangkiti boleh menyebarkan virus kepada orang lain dalam tempoh sebelum dan selepas wujudnya gejala.
Sekiranya menjangkiti orang dewasa, sesetengahnya tidak menunjukkan sebarang simptom, namun mereka boleh menyebarkan virus tersebut kepada orang lain.
Pada tahun 1997, Malaysia dikejutkan dengan wabak Penyakit Tangan, Kaki dan Mulut di Sarawak yang melibatkan 2628 kes dengan 31 kematian di mana 29 dari kematian tersebut disahkan disebabkan oleh Enterovirus 71 (EV 71).
Berdasarkan Sistem Survelan HFMD di Malaysia, tidak ada tren tertentu di negeri-negeri di Semenanjung dan Sabah.
Namun begitu bagi Negeri Sarawak, peningkatan kes HFMD yang melibatkan jangkitan EV71 berlaku setiap 3 tahun.
