Ma’rifatullah (mengenal Allah) bukanlah mengenali dzat Allah, karena hal ini tidak mungkin terjangkau oleh kapasitas manusia yang terbatas. Sebab bagaimana mungkin manusia yang terbatas ini mengenali sesuatu yang tidak terbatas?. Segelas susu yang dibikin seseorang tidak akan pernah mengetahui seperti apakah orang yang telah membuatnya menjadi segelas susu.Menurut Ibn Al Qayyim : Ma’rifatullah yang dimaksudkan oleh ahlul ma’rifah (orang-orang yang mengenali Allah) adalah ilmu yang membuat seseorang melakukan apa yang menjadi kewajiban bagi dirinya dan konsekuensi pengenalannya”.
Ma’rifatullah tidak dimaknai dengan arti harfiah semata, namun ma’riaftullah dimaknai dengan pengenalan terhadap jalan yang mengantarkan manusia dekat dengan Allah, mengenalkan rintangan dan gangguan yang ada dalam perjalanan mendekatkan diri kepada Allah.
CIRI-CIRI DALAM MA’RIFATULLAH
Seseorang dianggap ma’rifatullah (mengenal Allah) jika ia telah mengenali
1. asma’ (nama) Allah
2. sifat Allah dan
3. af’al (perbuatan) Allah, yang terlihat dalam ciptaan dan tersebar dalam kehidupan alam ini.
Kemudian dengan bekal pengetahuan itu, ia menunjukkan :
1. sikap shidq (benar) dalam ber -mu’amalah (bekerja) dengan Allah,
2. ikhlas dalam niatan dan tujuan hidup yakni hanya karena Allah,
3. pembersihan diri dari akhlak-akhlak tercela dan kotoran-kotoran jiwa yang membuatnya bertentangan dengan kehendak Allah SWT
4. sabar/menerima pemberlakuan hukum/aturan Allah atas dirinya
5. berda’wah/ mengajak orang lain mengikuti kebenaran agamanya
6. membersihkan da’wahnya itu dari pengaruh perasaan, logika dan subyektifitas siapapun. Ia hanya menyerukan ajaran agama seperti yang pernah diajarkan Rasulullah SAW.
