رمضان هو الشهر التاسع في التقويم الاسلامي. وشهر رمضان هو شهر البركات الكثيرة للمسلمين لانهم يؤمنون ان القران نزل للمرة الاولى على محمد بن عبد الله رسول الإسلام خلال هذا الشهر في عام 610م. كان في غار حراء عندما جاء الملاك جبريل اليه وقال "اقرأ باسم ربك الذي خلق" وكانت هذه هي الآية الاولى التي نزلت من القرآن.يبدأ شهر رمضان عند ثبوت رؤية الهلال يوم 29 من شعبان، وفي حالة عدم رؤيته يصبح شهر شعبان 30 يوماً ثم اليوم التالي يكون أول أيام رمضان، وتبلغ مدة الشهر 29-30 يوم أيضاً بثبوت رؤية الهلال، وعند انتهاء رمضان يحتفل المسلمون بعيد الفطر.
كما أن لشهر رمضان مكانة خاصة في تراث وتاريخ المسلمين ؛ لأنهم يؤمنون أن بدأ الوحي وأول ما نزل من القرآن على النبي محمد بن عبد الله كان في ليلة القدر من هذا الشهر في عام 610 م، حيث كان الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم في غار حراء عندما جاء إليه المَلَك جبريل، وقال له "اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ " وكانت هذه هي الآية الأولى التي نزلت من القرآن، والقرآن أنزل من اللوح المحفوظ ليلة القدر جملة واحدة، فوضع في بيت العزة في سماء الدنيا في رمضان، ثم كان جبريل ينزل به مجزئاً في الأوامر والنواهي والأسباب، وذلك في ثلاث وعشرين سنة.
يرتبط شهر رمضان أيضاً عن الدول الإسلامية بالعديد من الطقوس الدينية مثل: صلاة التراويح والأعتكاف في العشر الأواخر، وأيضاً العديد من العادات والتقاليد مثل دعوة الأخرين على الإفطار وإقامة موائد لإفطار الغير قادرين، كما يوجد العديد من المظاهر التراثية التي أرتبطت بهذا الشهر مثل: الفانوس والزينة ومدفع رمضان، وأيضاً شخصية المسحراتي والحكواتي، ومأكولات وبعض الحلوى والتي يتم تناولها عقب الإفطار.
