Katakanlah: "Serulah Allah atau serulah Ar-Rahman. Dengan nama yang mana saja kamu seru, Dia mempunyai al asmaa'ul husna (nama-nama yang terbaik) dan janganlah kamu mengeraskan suaramu dalam salatmu dan janganlah pula merendahkannya dan carilah jalan tengah di antara kedua itu" (Al-Israa' 17:110)
"Allah memiliki Asmaa' ulHusna, maka memohonlah kepada-Nya dengan menyebut nama-nama yang baik itu..." (Al-A'raaf :180)
Jumlah Asmaul Husna adalah 99 nama, sebagaimana disebutkan dalam hadits yang diriwayatkan Tirmidzi, diperkuat dengan hadits riwayat Bukhari.
Dari Abu Hurairah r.a. ia berkata Nabi Muhammad Saw bersabda: "Sesungguhnya Allah Swt mempunyai 99 nama, yaitu seratus kurang satu, barangsiapa menghitungnya (menghafal seluruhnya) masuklah ia kedalam surga" (HR. Bukhari).
