ปัญหาสำคัญของระบบบริการทางการแพทย์ไทยที่ยังไม่สามารถแก้ไขได้คือ การขาดแคลนแพทย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะทางในพื้นที่ชนบท เพราะแพทย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะทางเหล่านี้ส่วนใหญ่จะทำงานอยู่ในโรงพยาบาลขนาดใหญ่เช่น โรงพยาบาลศูนย์ ฯ โรงพยาบาลจังหวัด ในเมืองใหญ่ ทำให้ปัจจุบันการให้บริการผู้ป่วยฉุกเฉินในชนบท จึงเป็นหน้าที่ของแพทย์ทั่วไป แพทย์ใช้ทุน หรือแพทย์ฝึกหัดที่ยังมีประสบการณ์ไม่มากพอ หรือแพทย์ในสาขาอื่นๆ ที่มาอยู่เวร ซึ่งจะมีข้อจำกัดต่อการรักษาพยาบาลผู้ป่วยเป็นอย่างมาก “โดยเฉพาะกรณีที่พบว่าผู้ป่วยมีอัตราเสี่ยงต่อการเป็นโรคเฉพาะทาง ซึ่งต้องใช้ความรวดเร็วในการวินิจฉัยและรักษา อาทิ โรคที่เกี่ยวข้องกับหลอดเลือดสมอง เช่นการอุดตันของลิ่มเลือด หลอดเลือดสมองฉีกขาดหรือแตก หรือตีบตัน หรือ โรคที่เกี่ยวข้องกับระบบหัวใจ เช่นหัวใจขาดเลือด” หากพบผู้ป่วยโรคฉุกเฉินที่มีอาการหนัก มีภาวะแทรกซ้อน และไม่มีแพทย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญที่จะรักษาหรือให้คำปรึกษาได้อย่างเหมาะสมและทันเวลา จะนำไปสู่การเสียชีวิตหรือพิการได้ด้วยเหตุนี้ งานวิจัยนี้ จึงมุ่งศึกษาและเสนอต้นแบบในการประยุกต์ใช้เทคโนโลยีที่เหมาะสมกับความต้องการทางการแพทย์ (Health Need) ที่แท้จริง และเพื่อใช้แก้ไขปัญหาหลักในเรื่องของการขาดแคลนแพทย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญเฉพาะทางในพื้นที่ชนบท
