Theo sách vở Phật giáo cũng như các tài liệu khảo cổ đã chứng minh, Tất-đạt-đa Cồ-đàm đã sống và giảng đạo ở vùng đông Ấn Độ từ khoảng thế kỉ thứ 6 TCN đến thế kỉ thứ 4 TCN.
Sau khi Tất-đạt-đa Cồ-đàm qua đời thì Phật giáo bắt đầu phân hóa ra thành nhiều nhánh và nhiều hệ tư tưởng, với nhiều sự khác biệt so với ban đầu. Nhánh Phật giáo nguyên thủy (hay Phật giáo Nam tông, Theravada, thường bị các nhà Đại thừa gọi là "Tiểu thừa") và nhánh Phát triển (hay Đại thừa, Mahayana, Phật giáo Bắc tông). Đạo Phật nguyên thủy phát triển mạnh ở Sri Lanka và Đông Nam Á (Thái Lan, Lào, Campuchia, Myanmar.) Đạo Phật Đại thừa phát triển ở Đông Á (Trung Quốc, Hàn Quốc, Nhật Bản, Việt Nam, Singapore) và bao gồm nhiều phân nhánh nhỏ hơn như Tịnh độ tông, Thiền tông, Phật giáo Tây Tạng, Chân ngôn tông, Thiên thai tông. Ngoài ra, theo một số cách phân loại, nhánh thứ 3 là Mật tông (vajrayana), phát triển ở Tây Tạng và Mông Cổ, nhưng, theo một số phân loại khác thì Mật tông được xếp vào Đại thừa.
Mặc dù phát triển chủ yếu ở châu Á, nhưng hiện nay Đạo Phật được tìm thấy ở khắp thế giới. Ước tính số người theo đạo Phật vào khoảng 350 triệu đến 1,6 tỷ người.
