Kitab al-Hikam karangan Imam Tajuddin Abu Fadhli Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Abdul Karim bin Athaillah Askandary boleh dianggap sebagai buku teks yang perlu dipelajari oleh orang-orang yang mau mendalami ilmu tauhid / tasauf serta berjalan pada jalan kerohanian. Dalamnya mengandungi kata-kata hikmat yang boleh dijadikan petunjuk jalan menuju Allah s.w.t dan mencapai keridaan-Nya.Kitab Al-Hikam ini merupakan karya utama Ibn ‘Atha’illah, yang sangat populer, yang berisikan kata-kata hikmah yang sangat tinggi nilainya, berisikan pemahaman tauhid, akhlak, dan ma'rifatullah, Syekh Ibn ‘Atha’illah as-Sakandari (w. 1309 M) hidup di Mesir di masa kekuasaan Dinasti Mameluk. Ia lahir di kota Alexandria (Iskandariyah), lalu pindah ke Kairo. Di kota inilah ia menghabiskan hidupnya dengan mengajar fikih mazhab Imam Maliki di berbagai lembaga intelektual, antara lain Masjid Al-Azhar. Di waktu yang sama dia juga dikenal luas dibidang tasawuf sebagai seorang “master” (syeikh) besar ketiga di lingkungan tarekat sufi Syadziliyah ini.
Ibn ‘Athaillah tergolong ulama yang produktif. Tak kurang dari 20 karya yang pernah dihasilkannya. Meliputi bidang tasawuf, tafsir, aqidah, hadits, nahwu, dan ushul fiqh. Dari beberapa karyanya itu yang paling terkenal adalah kitab al-Hikam
