Selanjutnya dalam lubang tersebut belut jantan membuat gelembung-gelembung udara yang membusa di permukaan air di atas salah satu lubangnya. Busa-busa tersebut berguna untuk menarik perhatian lawan jenisnya.
Belut jantan menanti kehadiran belut betina di lubang yang tidak diliputi busa. Setelah belut betina yang dinanti tiba, sebelum perkawinan dilangsungkan akan terjadi cumbu-cumbuan mesra terlebih dahulu. Dalam perkawinan telur-telur dari betina akan dikeluarkan di sekitar lubang dibawah busa-busa yang mengapung pada permukaan air. Telur yang sudah dibuahi selanjutnya akan dicakup belut jantan untuk disemburkan dan diamankan dalam lubang persembunyian.Kemudian belut jantanlah yang akan menjalani tugas menjaga telur-telur tersebut sampai menetas. Selama menjaga telur ini belut jantan galaknya bukan main. Setiap mahluk yang mendekat ke sarang pasti akan diserang.
