وقد سميت بهذا الاسم والله أعلم بسبب ما ورد فيها من قصة موسى عليه السلام مع قومه بشأن القتيل الذي لم يعرف قاتله فأمر الله موسى أن يأمر قومه أن يذبحوا بقرة أياً كانت.
وتعتبر سورة البقرة أطول سورة في القرآن الكريم، وهي أول سورة نزلت بالمدينة باستثناء الآية (وَاتَّقُوا يَوْمًا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى اللَّهِ) فإنّها نزلت في حجة الوداع، وتُعتبر هذه آيةً مكيّةً. ولسورة البقرة فضلٌ كبير وثواب كثير، وهي ذات عَظمة كبيرة، تحتوي في ثناياها على بعض الأحكام وآيات الرُقية، وكغيرها من السّور المدنيّة، تناولت سورة البقرة عدداً من المواضيع أهمّها التّشريع الإسلاميّ
