Imam Syafi’i, pendiri madzab Syafi’iyyah, mempunyai jawaban yang tegas,
”Bidah diklasifikasikan menjadi dua ketegori: mahmudah (bidah yanag terpuji) dan madzmumah (bidah yang jelek). Maka, setiap yang sesuai dengan hadits itulah bidah mahmudah dan yang bertentangan dengan sunnah itulah bidah madzmumah.”
Secara lebih terperinci, Asy-Syafi’i mendeteksi bidah yang sesat dengan gejala-gejala sbb: tidak berlandaskan Alquran, hadits, ijma’, dan atsar.
Bila cirri-ciri tersebut terdapat dalam praktik ibadah umat, maka itulah bidah yang dlalalah (sesat).
Namun, ketika tidak melanggar Alquran, hadits, ijma’, dan atsar, maka itu merupakan bidah yang mahmudah.
Artinya, tidak sesat.
Sedangkan, secara lebih terperinci, menurut Abi Muhammad ibn Abdul Salam, bidah terbagi menjadi lima: wajib, haram, makruh, mustahab, dan mubah.
Pembagian ini berdasarkan pada klasifiksi hukum syara yang tidak lepas dari kelima hukum di atas.
