Charles Bridge ( Czech Karlův most ) a medieval bridge in Prague across the Vltava River connecting the historic regions of Mala Strana and the Old Town. The bridge is 520 m long and 9.5 m wide. The bridge is supported by 16 powerful arches lined with sand blocks of sandstone. The stone bridge was originally called Prague in 1870 it was officially renamed in honor of the founder Charles IV. It is decorated with thirty sculptures mostly of religious content.The bridge is the connecting link between the Prague Castle and the Old Town. Through the bridge was the so-called Royal Road and now the Prague Marathon. Many key events in the history of the city are connected with the bridge. For example in 1420 the bridge helped the Hussites to reach the Lesser Country and in 1648 the Swedes attacked Hradcany from this bridge.
Juditin Bridge the forerunner of the Charles Bridge, was built and completed in 1172 at the time of Vladislav II and his wife Queen Jutta of Thuringia. The bridge was used even at the beginning of the reign of Charles IV but even then because of the commercial public and construction boom there was a need for a more modern bridge. In 1342 Juditin Bridge was almost completely destroyed during the flood. The remains of one of his arches are in the basement of the house in the Luzhitskaya Seminary, 82 ( Mala Strana ).
