Jika kita mengatakan semoga shalawat pada beliau dari malaikat, maksudnya adalah doa berupa ampunan dari malaikat.
Jika kita mengatakan semoga shalawat pada beliau dari seorang khotib (yang berkhutbah), maksudnya adalah doa kebaikan dari khatib.
Jika kita mengatakan semoga shalawat pada beliau dari Allah, maksudnya adalah semoga Allah merahmati beliau.
Namun Syaikh Muhammad bin Shalih Al-‘Utsaimin rahimahullah menyatakan bahwa shalawat itu lebih spesial lagi dari do’a rahmat. Lihat saja, para ulama sepakat mendoakan rahmat pada setiap orang beriman. Namun mengenai shalawat pada selain Nabi, para ulama berbeda pendapat, apakah boleh ataukah tidak. Kalau do’a itu bermakna rahmat, maka tentu tidak ada perbedaan. Sebagaimana kita mendo’akan seseorang dengan rahmat, berarti juga boleh kita bershalawat padanya semoga shalawat pada orang tersebut dari Allah, seperti itu doanya.
