Imam Al-Bukhari -rahimahullah- berkata, "Aku tidak memasukkan dalam kitabku, yakni Al-Jami’ (Shahih Bukhari),kecuali yang shahih-shahih saja. Ada hadits-hadits shahih yang lain tidak aku masukkan karena terlalu panjang".
Beliau menyusun kitab Shahihain ini dengan seleksi yang sangat ketat, sehingga hanya hadits-hadits yang memenuhi
syarat tersebutlah yang tercantum ke dalam kitabnya. Dalam tahapan penulisannya, Imam Al-Bukhari mengumpulkan
dan meneliti satu juta hadits serta menemui 80.000 perawi di tujuh negara. Dia sangat berhati-hati dalam menyusunnya
dan disebutkan setiap kali akan menuliskan satu hadits, dia terlebih dahulu Shalat istikharah dan memohon pertolongan
kepada Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. Untuk menyelesaikan semua proses itu hingga tuntas, dia membutuhkan waktu 16 tahun.
