হযরত হূদ (আঃ) দুর্ধর্ষ ও শক্তিশালী ‘আদ জাতির প্রতি প্রেরিত হয়েছিলেন। আল্লাহর গযবে ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত বিশ্বের প্রধান ছয়টি জাতির মধ্যে কওমে নূহ-এর পরে কওমে ‘আদ ছিল দ্বিতীয় জাতি। হূদ (আঃ) ছিলেন এদেরই বংশধর। ‘আদ ও ছামূদ ছিল নূহ (আঃ)-এর পুত্র সামের বংশধর এবং নূহের পঞ্চম অথবা অষ্টম অধঃস্তন পুরুষ। ইরামপুত্র ‘আদ-এর বংশধরগণ ‘আদ ঊলা’ বা প্রথম ‘আদ এবং অপর পুত্রের সন্তান ছামূদ-এর বংশধরগণ ‘আদ ছানী বা দ্বিতীয় ‘আদ বলে খ্যাত।‘আদ ও ছামূদ উভয় গোত্রই ইরাম-এর দু’টি শাখা। সেকারণ ‘ইরাম’ কথাটি ‘আদ ও ছামূদ উভয় গোত্রের জন্য সমভাবে প্রযোজ্য। এজন্য কুরআনে কোথাও ‘আদ ঊলা’ (নাজম ৫০) এবং কোথাও ‘ইরাম যাতিল ‘ইমাদ’ (ফজর ৭) শব্দ ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।‘আদ সম্প্রদায়ের ১৩টি পরিবার বা গোত্র ছিল। আম্মান হ’তে শুরু করে হাযারামাউত ও ইয়ামন পর্যন্ত তাদের বসতি ছিল।তাদের ক্ষেত-খামারগুলো ছিল অত্যন্ত সজীব ও শস্যশ্যামল। তাদের প্রায় সব ধরনের বাগ-বাগিচা ছিল। তারা ছিল সুঠামদেহী ও বিরাট বপু সম্পন্ন। আল্লাহ তা‘আলা তাদের প্রতি অনুগ্রহের দুয়ার খুলে দিয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু বক্রবুদ্ধির কারণে এসব নে‘মতই তাদের কাল হয়ে দাঁড়ালো। তারা নিজেরা পথভ্রষ্ট হয়েছিল ও অন্যকে পথভ্রষ্ট করেছিল। তারা শক্তি মদমত্ত হয়ে ‘আমাদের চেয়ে শক্তিশালী আর কে আছে’ (ফুছছিলাত/হামীম সাজদাহ ১৫) বলে ঔদ্ধত্য প্রদর্শন করতে শুরু করেছিল। তারা আল্লাহর ইবাদত পরিত্যাগ করে নূহ (আঃ)-এর আমলে ফেলে আসা মূর্তিপূজার শিরক-এর পুনরায় প্রচলন ঘটালো। মাত্র কয়েক পুরুষ আগে ঘটে যাওয়া নূহের সর্বগ্রাসী প্লাবনের কথা তারা বেমালুম ভুলে গেল। ফলে আল্লাহ পাক তাদের হেদায়াতের জন্য তাদেরই মধ্য হ’তে হূদ (আঃ)-কে নবী হিসাবে প্রেরণ করলেন। উল্লেখ্য যে, নূহের প্লাবনের পরে এরাই সর্বপ্রথম মূর্তিপূজা শুরু করে।
হযরত হূদ (আঃ) ও কওমে ‘আদ সম্পর্কে পবিত্র কুরআনের ১৭টি সূরায় ৭৩টি আয়াতে বর্ণিত হয়েছে।
