O Turismo CO₂ Legal é uma iniciativa socioambiental que começou, em 2009, na Área de Proteção Ambiental Costa de Itacaré/Serra Grande (BA) e foi reconhecida pela UNESCO, em 2011, como exemplo de novas e boas práticas de educação para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Em 2013, sendo uma das 5 iniciativas aprovadas no Edital TAM Sustentabilidade, o programa entra num novo estágio para ganhar escala, se consolidar e ser replicado em outros destinos turísticos da Bahia e do Brasil.O programa foi concebido para trazer soluções simples e práticas para quatro problemas graves e complexos:
1) a destruição das florestas;
2) a pobreza no meio rural;
3) aquecimento global e mudanças climáticas e;
4) os impactos socioambientais negativos da atividade turística.
A proposta é promover o comprometimento de todos que, direta ou indiretamente, se relacionam com o turismo: empresas e negócios, bem como os turistas, compensando as emissões de CO₂ geradas por suas atividades. Funciona como uma plataforma para integrar os interesses desses diferentes atores.
Os recursos financeiros gerados pelas compensações das emissões são destinados aos agricultores tradicionais que vivem nas florestas. Ao serem envolvidos no programa passam a receber um pagamento por serviços ambientais e assumem os seguintes compromissos:
- Conservar os remanescentes florestais das suas propriedades;
- Reflorestar suas áreas desmatadas;
- Adotar práticas agrícolas conservacionistas;
- Não caçar, nem utilizar fogo para limpeza das roças;
- Matricular seus filhos na escola;
- Participar das capacitações oferecidas.
Desta forma, agricultores que antes viviam em situação de vulnerabilidade social e atuando como agentes da degradação ambiental passam a exercer o papel de protagonistas da conservação ambiental.
