“জাতক পঞ্চাশক” গ্রন্থটি প্রথম প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল আজ থেকে প্রায় পঁয়ত্রিশ বছর আগে। অনুবাদকের জীবদ্দশায় পুরো গ্রন্থটি একসাথে প্রকাশ করা সম্ভব হয়নি একমাত্র অর্থাভাবের কারণে। অনুবাদকের জবানী থেকে আমরা জানতে পারি যে, এই গ্রন্থের মোট পঞ্চাশটি জাতকের মধ্য থেকে একটি-দুটি করে সর্বসাকুল্যে চৌত্রিশটি জাতক প্রকাশ করা সম্ভব হয়েছিল। সেই চৌত্রিশটি জাতক মিলেই আজকের এই জাতক পঞ্চাশক গ্রন্থ।আমরা জানি, নবাঙ্গ শাস্তাশাসনের এক অঙ্গ হচ্ছে ‘জাতক’। অন্যান্য অঙ্গগুলো হচ্ছে : সূত্র, গেয়্য, ব্যাকরণ, গাথা, উদান, ইতিবুত্তক, অদ্ভুত ধর্ম ও বেদল্ল। ‘জাতক’ হচ্ছে বুদ্ধ তথাগতের অতীত জীবনের কাহিনি। এই জাতকগুলো বুদ্ধ বিভিন্ন সময় বিভিন্ন প্রসঙ্গে ভিক্ষু -ভিক্ষুণী ও উপাসক-উপাসিকাদের উদ্দেশ্যে দেশনা করেছিলেন। এই জাতকগুলোতে বহুকাল আগের সমাজ-সংস্কৃতি যেমন ধারণ করা হয়েছে, তেমনি দান-শীলাদি অনেক নৈতিক সদ্গুণও বিধৃত হয়েছে। জাতক পড়ে অনেক মানুষের শ্রদ্ধাসম্পত্তি লাভ হয়। যার ফলে অনেক মানুষ ধর্ম ময় জীবন যাপনে উৎসাহ পেয়ে থাকেন। সেই সাথে এমন অনেক মানুষ আছেন যারা জাতকের কীর্তি কাহিনি মনযোগ দিয়ে পড়ে বিপুল আনন্দ লাভ করে থাকেন।
জাতক পঞ্চাশক গ্রন্থটি দীর্ঘদিন পর শ্রীমৎ বিপশ্বী ভিক্ষু কল্পতরুর ব্যানারে কিছুটা সংশোধিত আকারে পুনর্মুদ্রণের উদ্যোগ নিয়েছেন। তার এই উদ্যোগের ফলে বইটি দীর্ঘদিন পর আবারও পাঠকের হাতে তুলে দেওয়া সম্ভব হলো। সেই সাথে বইটিকে এ্যান্ড্রয়েড অ্যাপ আকারে বানিয়েছেন শ্রীমৎ বিমল জ্যোতি ভিক্ষু। এই সংস্করণে প্রত্যেকটি জাতকের সাথে একটি করে ছবি যোগ করা হলো। এতে পাঠক বইটি পড়ে আরও আনন্দ পাবেন বলে আশা করি। গ্রন্থটি সম্পূর্ণ বিনামূল্যে বিতরণ করা হলো। এতে কিছুটা হলেও শাসন-সদ্ধর্ম প্রচার-প্রসারে অবদান রাখবে বলে আশা করি।
এ গ্রন্থ পাঠে পাঠক যদি সামান্যতমও ধর্মবোধে উজ্জীবিত হয়ে নির্মল আনন্দ পেয়ে থকেন এবং সেই সাথে বিমুক্তিরস আস্বাদনে ব্রতী হন, তাহলেই কেবল প্রকাশক, প্রকাশনায় অর্থসহায়তা দাতা ও সংশ্লিষ্ট সকলের শ্রম ও অর্থব্যয় সার্থক হবে।
