50 Jahre ist es her, dass Astronauten zum letzten Mal den Mond betreten haben (Apollo 17, Dezember 1972). Das soll sich noch in diesem Jahrzehnt ändern: Das Artemis-Programm der NASA sieht vor, wieder Menschen auf unserem Trabanten zu landen. Dieses Mal wird auch die erste Frau dabei sein, die zum Mond fliegt. Aber nicht nur das: Gemeinsam mit internationalen Partnern soll mit dem Lunar Gateway eine Raumstation mit Landefähre in der Mondumlaufbahn entstehen und ein dauerhaftes Basislager auf dem Mond errichtet werden. Deutschland ist mit seiner Expertise in Raumfahrttechnik und -forschung bei diesem neuen Aufbruch zum Mond dabei.Mit dem Auftakt der noch unbemannten Mission Artemis I wurden Ende 2022 bereits alle neu entwickelten Systeme erfolgreich im Zusammenspiel getestet – das Orion-Raumschiff mit dem Europäischen Service Modul (ESM), die Großrakete Space Launch System (SLS) und die Bodensysteme. Das DLR geleitete MARE-Experiment untersuchte auf dem ersten Artemis-Flug mittels der zwei baugleichen weiblichen Messpuppen Helga und Zohar an Bord die Strahlenbelastung während des gesamten Fluges.
Auf Artemis I wird voraussichtlich 2025 die Mission Artemis II folgen. Sie wird erstmals eine vierköpfige Crew an Bord haben und den Mond umrunden. Mit Artemis III sollen 2026 schließlich wieder Menschen auf dem Mond landen.
Ein zentraler Teil der Orion-Raumschiffe aller Artemis-Flüge ist das Europäische Servicemodul ESM, das im Auftrag der NASA von der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation ESA zu wesentlichen Teilen in Deutschland gebaut wird. Es beinhaltet das Haupttriebwerk und liefert über vier Solarsegel den Strom, außerdem reguliert es Klima und Temperatur im Raumschiff und lagert Treibstoff, Sauerstoff und Wasservorräte für die Crew.
Die Augmented-Reality-App „DLR Artemis Mission“ macht die Facetten des Artemis-Programms virtuell erlebbar. Die Technik von Rakete, Raumschiff und Flugmechanik werden ebenso virtuell erfahrbar, wie das Abenteuer des ersten Test-Fluges mit Helga und Zohar an Bord. Die Menschheit bricht erneut zum Mond auf - dieses Mal um zu bleiben. Und Deutschland ist dabei.
